Charleston City Rec Centers

Bringing much needed public spaces to two of Charleston’s most populous neighborhoods, these twin building are the beginning of a new design language for the city of Charleston’s Civic Architecture. The smaller project, in the heart of the West Ashley neighborhood, is an aquatic center with a natatorium, public meeting spaces, and offices for staff. The larger one, on the small, rural neighborhood of John’s Island, will be an epicenter of recreational activity and community gathering on the sea island. Featuring a natatorium, many public meeting spaces, cardio and movement rooms, and a large gymnasium with two full size basketball courts.

My Role:

Served as Project Architect for two municipal recreation center projects for the City of Charleston, contributing to project development from programming through construction documents under the close guidance of senior architects. Played a key role in coordinating architectural design efforts and supporting multidisciplinary consultant teams, while working closely with the city’s Capitol Projects Team, Sottile and Sottile, and Parks and Recreation staff to translate community needs, operational goals, and budget considerations into a cohesive design solution.

Assisted with programming, space planning, and design studies to support schematic design and design development phases. Helped prepare technical drawings and design documentation in coordination with structural, MEP, civil, and landscape consultants, with an emphasis on alignment with City standards. Participated in internal design reviews and quality control processes, contributing to clear, well‑coordinated documents while gaining experience through hands‑on collaboration and mentorship from senior project leaders.
